How to build a greenhouse staging

A slatted bench for a greenhouse or shed: seed trays and young plants up at a comfy height, close to the light, with a shelf underneath for pots, compost and overwintering chillies.

Tools

Step by step

  1. Cut the thick timber into 4 legs of 75cm, 4 long rails of 120cm and 4 short rails of 46cm. Cut the battens into slats 50cm long - about 34.
  2. Make the two ends: screw a short rail across two legs at the top, and another 25cm off the ground. Check the corners are square.
  3. Stand the ends up and join them with the long rails, front and back, at the top and at shelf height.
  4. Screw slats across the top, leaving a finger-width gap (about 2cm) between each so water drains and air gets round.
  5. Slat the bottom shelf the same way. Stand it in the greenhouse, check it's level, and fill it up.

Rather buy it? Aluminium staging costs about £30-60.
