Tools
- Scissors
- A stick to mark the circle
Step by step
- Pick a sunny spot and mark a circle about 1m across on the soil.
- Push 8 canes in evenly round the circle, 20-30cm deep, each leaning in towards the middle.
- Pull the tops together and tie them tightly where they cross, about 20cm from the top. Wrap the string round several times, then knot it.
- For extra strength, wind string round all the canes at about knee height.
- Plant one bean at the foot of each cane, just outside the circle. They'll wind up on their own - nudge any strays back onto their cane.
Tips
- Build it before planting, so you don't spear the roots.
- In windy spots, push the canes in deeper - a full wigwam of beans catches a lot of wind.
